Complete Genome Sequences of Three Siphoviridae Bacteriophages Infecting Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis

Three bacteriophages, 118970_sal1, 118970_sal2, and 64795_sal3, were isolated from water buffalo feces in southern Italy, exhibiting lytic activity against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis. These bacteriophages belong to the Siphoviridae family and have a 60,113-bp, 123,930-bp, and 48,094-bp double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genome containing 72, 173, and 80 coding sequences (CDSs), respectively.

Target Site Recognition by a Diversity-Generating Retroelement

Diversity-generating retroelements (DGRs) are in vivo sequence diversification machines that are widely distributed in bacterial, phage, and plasmid genomes. They function to introduce vast amounts of targeted diversity into protein-encoding DNA sequences via mutagenic homing. Adenine residues are converted to random nucleotides in a retrotransposition process from a donor template repeat (TR) ...

Selective Ligand Recognition by a Diversity-Generating Retroelement Variable Protein

Diversity-generating retroelements (DGRs) recognize novel ligands through massive protein sequence variation, a property shared uniquely with the adaptive immune response. Little is known about how recognition is achieved by DGR variable proteins. Here, we present the structure of the Bordetella bacteriophage DGR variable protein major tropism determinant (Mtd) bound to the receptor pertactin, ...

Bacteriophages Infecting Propionibacterium acnes

Viruses specifically infecting bacteria, or bacteriophages, are the most common biological entity in the biosphere. As such, they greatly influence bacteria, both in terms of enhancing their virulence and in terms of killing them. Since the first identification of bacteriophages in the beginning of the 20th century, researchers have been fascinated by these microorganisms and their ability to e...

Heterologous expression of the Bacteroides ruminicola xylanase gene in Bacteroides fragilis and Bacteroides uniformis.

A cloned xylanase gene from the ruminal bacterium Bacteroides ruminicola 23 was transferred by conjugation into the colonic species Bacteroides fragilis and Bacteroides uniformis by using the Escherichia coli-Bacteroides shuttle vector pVAL-1. The cloned gene was expressed in both species, and xylanase specific activity in crude extracts was found to be at least 1400-fold greater than that foun...
